In order to produce a black Savannah cat, both parents must carry the black colour gene as it is recessive.
The black Savannah cat appears to be all one colour and the reason for this is that the black colour gene is solid. The solid gene produces a hair that is all one one colour because the protein responsible for the bands or ticking on the hair shaft is defective.
In black Savannah cats, the underlying spotted pattern is often referred to as ghost spotting. Dark brown to jet black spotting is still present but very difficult to see.
The paw pads of the black Savannah cat are a deep charcoal or brownish/black colour and the tail tip is always black.
The black Savannah cat has green, yellow or amber eyes, dark and prominent tear duct lines, black lips and solid black nose leather.
